Beach Culture Embraces Sunscreen

Colorful sunscreens, typically zinc oxide-based and water resistant, entered the market, sometimes applied just to the nose or under the eyes, and sometimes applied all over the face or in designs like stripes. They were initially popularized by lifeguards, professional surfers, and volleyball players.

Australia launched its "Slip-Slop-Slap" ad campaign, about slipping on a shirt, slopping on the sunscreen, and slapping on a hat. Recent additions include seeking shade or shelter and sliding on sunglasses.
