Earliest Uses of Zinc Oxide

500 BC

People in ancient India started using zinc oxide as a sun barrier. Today it's one of only two sunscreen ingredients that the FDA considers GRASE (Generally Regarded As Safe and Effective).

400 BC

Ancient Greeks used olive oil for sun protection, though it had more of an impact in keeping their skin soft and moisturized, rather than protected from the sun.

Canopies emerged as far back as the Achaemenid Empire and the Middle Ages.
